23 things- 23rd thing

I think it's great that the whole library is involved in this program. It has been interesting to learn new ways of doing things. I had previously experimented with a few of these technologies- delicious and facebook...it is a good way of keeping in touch. My family used FaceBook as a way of communicating about a sick baby who was born in another State- they were able to see his progress without each person individually bothering the parents.
I like the idea of a personal blog, once you get over the fact that your voice is out there.
I also discovered Geni.com which allows you to map your geneology. It's fantastic. I found out that I am related to the McSporrans! Seriously.
There are issues around privacy and identity theft.
Jane has pointed out that we need to be aware of how we use these technologies. Are we just going to transfer the old ways to new software...
There is much scope for the library to be involved with our community, students, researchers, other librarians wordwide. It is important to look at why and how the software is used.
I look forward to further developments

Communication-Google talk

Thing 22-Read about and explore various web based communication tools including Skype, MSN Messenger and Meebo.
Well I must say those articles anout voice over IP were fascinating!!!
I used google talk, and added a colleague's gmail address to my account, then we talked using google.
Had a bit of a snag to add the gadget to this blog, because I added the URL instead of the CODE.
Dianne sent me the correct URL to get the code and it's now done. Thanks!
This technolgy has so many uses, both for the library and for those who are far awaaaaaaaaaay.

21. Find and listen to a Podcast or two

The Faculty of Business and Law have a Professional Development Unit that requires the students to login to Blackboard and listen to Podcasts which informs them of the content that week's session. It is also good for me to keep up to date.
I have also listened to news podcasts on Factiva and The Age online. This is fantastic for those who are visually impaired.

20. Watch YouTube videos people have made about libraries

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukJmF6f0JdQ
The utube video show the scene of Gorilla Librarian at an interview for a job.
It's from the first series of Monty Python's Flying Circus.

It doesn'r exactly fit the criteria for watching a video someone has made about libraries, but the others were a tad boring.
That is, other than the prescribed : a future history of the media by Robin Sloan and Matt Thompson.

Add your pets photo to a wiki number 19!!!

I have added a photo to the VU Wiki.

What's my experience of Wiki's? This task was simple enough, i.e. adding information and photos, but it would take a lot for me to edit someone else's content, on wikipedia for instance.

18- Library 2.0

VU Library is right into this movement. The online services reflect that, and hopefully we will be able to optimise many web 2.0 technologies, so that services will be interactive.
EbscoHost 2.0 is a value added extra for our database users, but I have trouble with students and staff using these additional services, mainly because they do not want to create another login (not so seamless!)
Sometimes I wonder whether we think that the Y generation use these things because they are emerging technologies and gen Y are the now generation...I have found that many are not comfortable with technology.
Listened to Stephen Abram speak at Deakin on Friday- he is adept at putting Library 2.0 in its sociological setting. He does not just focus on the technical aspects of this change, but the necessity for it. Librarians are in a good place to assist others with the enormous growth of information--we all know this.

Week 15

I have had a look at google books for the first time-good to be able to limit to full view drill down by subject then add keywords etc. Can add to your own library of titles.
As for google scholar, I use it all the time professionally. It is fantastic!

Number 16- igoogle

Well I think that is almost it for the week. I have made a big effort to complete many of the 23 things task.
It's Friday afternoon and I have just personalised my igoogle page, complete with a gadget enabling a spider to follow me around the page.
It's actually really handy to have my books, news weather etc on my page. It would be distracting at work, but good for the home environment.

delicious

I created a delicious site last year when playing around with ideas for InfoLinks alternatives.

Google docs

Sharing documents through google docs could change my life! I am currently working on a report that involves the library's Business and Law team at various campuses. The latest version of the report is now very clear and easy to access.

However, I could not master posting to your blog from Google Docs, as the edit setting would not open. Does anyone who has completed this task have any clues?

Google Maps are great

This is an amazing new development. You can see the actual location, good for real estate purposes. You can save a particular location to your own profile, such a favourite galleries like the Heide Museum of Modern Art. Of course, one could have a look at the Tate in London...

More Flickr

Good heavens, what a trial it was to get into more flickr! Ah well it's finally done even though the slideshow is enormously out of focus. Looks good in flickr but no on my blog....

Have subscribed to some posts

have added blog.digg to my google reader

Week 5 RSS feeds and blogs

Week 5: Number 9.RSS feeds and blogs9. Set up a feed reader has been completed.

I have also completed Library Thing
